20 Things to Do in summer 2021

Part 1 (part 2 to follow next month)

WITH FOREIGN HOLIDAYS IN TRAFFIC LIGHT CHAOS AND SOUTH HAMS TOWNS PACKED TO THE GUNNELS HERE’S SOME ACTIVITIES FOR A BIT OF MUCH-NEEDED PEACE AND CALM THIS SUMMER. CHECK BEFORE HEADING OUT FOR ANY SOCIAL DISTANCE GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS.

Enjoy the perennials at Wildside Watch out for dolphins

Look out for dolphins and all manner of sealife with Dolphin Watch UK. These specialists in guided dolphin and wildlife watching trips sail out from Dartmouth, Brixham, Paignton and Torquay with local skippers. They have impressive dolphin counters of recent sightings on their website www.dolphinwatchuk. co.uk which gives details of all the sailings, boats and crews. Alan and Hilary Hemsley run the trips from Dartmouth on their boat African Queen. They’re both qualified skippers, with more than 20 years of experience of the port, and have worked with Plymouth University students in research and surveying coastal waters. They run a variety of trips - from two-hour early bird and evening trips to half days and whole days - and have toilet and hot drink facilities onboard. Drinks and packed lunch packages can be added to the cruises and, over in Brixham, there’s even a local fish and chip supper option.

Wildside garden at Buckland Monachorum, near Yelverton, has been lovingly created by Keith Wiley and his late wife Ros. The three sections – Lower Garden, Courtyard and Canyons – host delightfully different planting, seating and water features. In July the massed perennials are out in full bloom, including Agapanthus, Campanulas, Lilies. Keith Wiley is a proponent of a ‘new naturalism’ movement, which seeks to work in harmony with nature, allowing plants to thrive much as they would in the wild. He’s a regular contributor to horticultural and lifestyle magazines, has lectured widely on both sides of the Atlantic, and written three books. Ros had a passion for wild landscapes and painting and combined her creativities at Wildside. A Channel 4 television programme followed the Wileys during a year at Wildside, balancing painting, gardening and nursery work. Ros sadly passed away in 2019 and a tribute garden has been planted in her memory. Open 11am-5pm July 10th to the 13th and 28th to the 31st. www.wileyatwildside.com

Go on a snorkel safari

New for this summer Plymouth’s National Aquarium has launched ‘snorkel safaris’ in Plymouth Sound. For a very reasonable rate those wanting to take their first steps into the world of snorkelling can be guided by fully qualified BSAC snorkel instructors every summer Saturday at Mount Batten Beach. The sessions run for one-and-a-half hours – at 10am or 1pm - and include how to use a snorkel, basic snorkel techniques and a chance to explore the local coastline. You can take your own equipment or snorkels, masks and wetsuits are provided at no extra cost. www.national-aquarium. co.uk/events/ocean-snorkel-safaris
