On his Tangelo Park project, Mr. Rosen said, “Epiphany
might be too strong a word. It was more of a voice I heard. A feel- ing that the time was right. I have achieved more success than I’d ever imagined.
It was time for me to recognize that I’ve been
blessed; to be thankful and to share my good fortune with others.” Rosen said he fell in love with the neighborhood. “I knew
I wanted to do some type of scholarship program for the people who lived there.” Today, the Tangelo Park Program gives every neighborhood child, age two to four, access to free preschool. Parents have access to parenting classes, vocational courses and technical training. Tangelo Park Elementary is now a grade-A school. The high school graduation rate for Tangelo Park is now at 100 percent. Furthermore, every high school graduate who is accepted to a Florida public university, community or state col- lege, or vocational school receives a full Harris Rosen Foundation scholarship, which covers tuition, living and educa- tional expenses through graduation. More than 200 students have earned Rosen scholarships, and of those, 75 percent have graduated from college. After spending $9 million on his adopted neighborhood of
2,500 residents, Rosen was once asked if the program has a stop- ping point. Rosen answered, “I will be involved in the program until Tangelo Park is a gated community and the average home is selling for $1 million. Then, I’m gone.”
