Okay, so it is possible dogs can have improved health with cannabis therapy, but how? When we utilize the entourage effect and understand the ECS prefers low-doses and balance, we are able to provide the ECS with supplemental compounds needed for a variety of normal processes. LET’S EXAMINE STORM PHOBIAS. When a storm-phobic
dog reacts, several things occur: elevated heart and respiration rates, peripheral vasoconstriction, hyperfocus on the trigger, alterations in serotonin and other behavioral biochemicals, and more. This is all part of the ‘fight or flight’ response which pre- pares the body to escape from a perceived threat. The ECS hears the distress call and kicks into action by causing the release of calming neurotransmitters, activating serotonin receptors (via CBD), and relaxing blood vessels and lower airways. This occurs whether or not external cannabis is administered, but the brain can override the ECS, which is also normal. If the perceived threat wasn’t a storm but a predator, your dog would need the ECS to take a back seat. However, the brain learns bad and good behaviors and
sometimes wires get crossed regarding what is safe and what is a predator. In this case, giving low to moderate doses of a whole- plant cannabis product having a CBD:THC 2:1-7:1 is likely to provide the ECS just what it needs to calm things down. WHAT IF YOUR DOG ALSO HAS JOINT DISCOMFORT DUE
TO LIFELONG FRISBEE PLAY? Well, the ECS is listening to any distress from the body and will happily shunt extra compounds to an area in need.
HOW DO WE KNOW HOW MUCH TO ADMINISTER WITH-
OUT CAUSING ADVERSE EFFECTS? When in doubt, less is more, but here are some general guidelines which may help. lNever give THC heavy products. Your dog doesn’t like to get high. lAvoid products which don’t have a clean, 3rd party test result (called certificate of analysis or COA) indicating PASS status on microbial growth, residual solvents and pesticides/herbicides. lResidual solvents should always be negative. Avoid RSOs (Rick Simpson Oils) as they are often made with hydrocarbons like butane and any amount can be harmful. If an RSO is made with ethanol, it should have a negative residual solvent. lIn general, it is best to avoid human CBD products as they can cause significant sedation. lUtilize pet-specific products on the market when possible. Contact the companies for assistance and if they are unable to help, move on to another company. Education is critical for you, your veterinarian and ultimately your dog’s health.
