Help For Senior Dogs In Shelters.
Chicago had its cows and Venice had its turtles, but no one has had life-size furry, four-legged caped superheroes - until now. Superheroes on Parade is a community sculpture campaign to help raise money for Southeastern Guide Dogs. Businesses and artists in Sarasota, St. Petersburg and Tampa sponsored and participated by bringing 90 dog and puppy sculptures to life. We attended one of the unveilings in May at a reception hosted by TradeWinds Island Resorts on St. Pete Beach. Ten painted dogs were unveiled including Splash, sponsored by TradeWinds Island Resorts and painted by modern landscape artist Elizabeth Fontaine-Barr. Splash has the colors of a beach sunset, complete with a starfish on his head. Jack is sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka and painted by Cuban artist Anthony Hernandez. Public voting is going on now through September 29th. For $1 per vote, you can help select the top three dogs in each community.

Well Bred & Well Read.
“Wait, you’re not going to read me the issue, cover to cover?” is what Cayenne appears to be saying with her thoughtful expression. This pretty Boca Raton pibble mix is seven years old, rescued and the apple of her dad’s eye. Considered a squirrel- afficionado (she’s never seen one she wouldn’t like to taste), Cayenne enjoys jogging, napping on the human bed, and porkhide treats. Photograph by Tina VaLant.
18 THE NEW BARKER
In addition to owning and operating three Love My Dog Resort boarding and daycare facilities, Natalie Conner founded the Diamond Dog Club in 2015 to assist shelters in finding homes for dogs that are often overlooked because of their age. With a soft spot for senior dogs, Natalie believes a senior dog has that many more years of experience at friendship. Currently, Love My Dog Resort is funding the advanced health screenings of senior dogs at SPCA Tampa Bay, Humane Society of Pinellas and Friends of Strays. Additionally, anyone who adopts a dog from the Diamond Dog Club, receives a free month of daycare, three waterpark visits and a free groom. To learn more, visit
