If the new owner doesn’t know
how to respond to this type of behavior in a way that will lead to appropriate behavior modification, the dog may end up back at the shelter or rescue organiza- tion. Such a fate would only compound the issue. This is one of the reasons why I
decided to become a certified dog trainer. Early on in my foster care career, I received a young Beagle named Bear who was at risk of being put down because he was a biter. However, it seems the personnel at the animal control center had confused a puppy’s nipping behavior with true biting. Although it was a relief that Bear wasn’t truly a biter, it also meant that he was teething, and teething usually results in one thing: destructive behavior. My home was really taking a beating! I still remember the anguish I felt trying to decide what to do. I had started to fall in love with Bear, but I also considered bringing him back to the rescue organi- zation in order to save my house from further destruction. Finally, I decided to do some research
to see what I could do to help curb this behavior, which made me want to learn more about dog training in general. From there, one thing led to another and with time and training, that puppy became the best dog I’ve ever had, and was my constant companion for the next 14 years. Whether you are fostering a dog or
providing it with a new forever home, please reach out to a certified dog trainer. The dog may simply need some rehabili- tation and adjusting into the new home. Doing so may prevent you from having to give up on the dog. In the process, you may discover that you are sharing your home with your new best friend.
