Teaching A Puppy To Walk On-Leash. by Jacqui Silla

Look is an important focus word. It is a great way to get Angel’s attention. Say look, squeak a toy or make a fun sound. She will ultimately come and sit in front of you. This will be your method to catch Angel’s attention on walks or in public places as well. Use it consistently and she will beam up at you like a show dog. Let’s go or heel: Keep your leash short

with high value treats in hand and say let’s go as you walk ahead. During your training ses- sions, incorporate walking fast, slow and stop, using the commands walk fast, walk slow, stop. Ask for a sit every time you stop and eventually Angel will automatically stop when you do, and sit. If Angel pulls, don’t pull or yank in

response. Simply stop and wait, or stop and turn around, heading in another direction.

Yanking on a dog’s neck serves no purpose, and it is not pleasant. Make yourself interesting and your dog will be happy to stay by your side. Remember: Don’t correct, redirect

Angel’s attention from the distraction (in our case, approaching people makes her want to bark) onto you with a squeaky, a whistle, a game, bouncing a ball, tossing a treat, running. Be aware of your surroundings, always, so that you will be prepared to redirect her attention. Editor’s Note: Following Jacqui’s easy

instructions, Angel, our eight-month-old puppy, was walking, on-leash, within just a few minutes. We continue to work with Angel, our VIP Rescue of Florida adoptee, for about 10 minutes, every day. She continues to improve and, what’s more, seems to enjoy the attention and extra mental stimulation.
