When asked what attracted her to the Dachshund breed, Melanie replied, “They’re smart, funny, goofy, and love to snuggle. They’ll sit on your lap and beg, just like a cat. Actually they’re just like cats. Cats that you can take out on a walk!” She credits Heidi with introduc-
ing her to a whole other world. “When you have a dog and you see another person with a dog, there is this instant connection, no matter where you are. Even in another country. That you get one another as dog lovers is a universal thing. Dogs are great conver- sation starters, and the perfect way to meet other people. Our pets are all a part of our family. I know people say that, but it’s true. Our lives just wouldn’t be the same without them,” said Melanie.

The Humane Society of Tampa Bay was established in 1912. In 1926, it was left a bequest by two sisters, Allison and Helen M. Holland, of the property and a two story house
in Tampa. In 1929, the shelter began operations using the declaration, “We speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.” The 15th Annual Tuxes & Tails Gala will be on October 14 at the Tampa Convention Center.

Dachshund Adoption Rescue & Education is a Florida-based non-profit rescue group dedicat- ed to the rescue, rehabilitation & re-homing of Dachshunds in need. The annual event, Doxapalooza on November 4, is
their biggest fundraising
event of the year. All of its members are volunteers and all of the dogs are fostered in the homes of volunteer foster parents.
