BUSINESS REPORT
SUPPORT FOR THE COMMUNITY
SCCYC Waterside-Connect has been delivering a critical outreach service in response to local communities significantly compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic. Young people from SCCYC’s social action project ‘Ignite Change’ have been active in supporting local food banks with donations, interacting with elderly and raising awareness on key issues they felt passionate about. The project was swiftly developed into a Covid-19 emergency support service to meet imminent
needs.SCCYC joined online neighbourhood platforms, signed up to the Northampton Community Resilience Hub and work closely with other community groups to support people all round Northampton. Actions have included: • Taking crisis preventive measures by preparing known vulnerable people for isolation in early March.
• Making weekly calls to the elderly and vulnerable to identify needs, share safety advice and chats to prevent loneliness.
• Volunteering to collect food and essential resources to grow the existing food bank and distribute to vulnerable people each week.
• Delivering weekly groceries to poverty deprived and isolated families.
• Cooking and delivering hot food to unwell lone people and the homeless whenever needed.
• The SGSS Gurdwara has been distributing surplus dry foods to University of Northampton’s international students.
As well as continued critical outreach support, SCCYC’s long term plan includes helping to reconnect people and help rebuild their lives after the traumatic impact of COVID19 by providing services to improve their social, health, wellbeing and training needs at SCCYC’s Waterside-Connect community hub on St James Mill Road.

APPROVAL GIVEN FOR NEW CANCER CENTRE
National architects GSSArchitecture are working with Kettering General Hospital and Macmillan Cancer Support to bring a brand-new Cancer Support Centre to the town, which they are delighted to announce has recently received planning approval. The new centre, the first of its kind in
North Northamptonshire, will be used by people who are living with, or are affected by cancer, and will offer them support, resources and therapeutic services. The centre will be situated within the courtyard inside the main hospital site, and will be operated by Kettering General Hospital, alongside their partner, Macmillan Cancer Support. Situated on a challenging site within the

courtyard of the hospital’s main ward block, the building has been designed to make the best use of the available space, whilst providing an engaging and sympathetic environment for centre users. The unique curved nature of the plan enables the building to
interact with several interesting external spaces that have been created, while maintaining the requirement for a less clinical, private and calming setting. Andrew Vallis, architect at GSSArchitecture, said: “It’s been a real pleasure working with Macmillan Cancer Support and Kettering General Hospital on such an interesting and important project to benefit the people of Northamptonshire and the surrounding areas - particularly given GSSArchitecture’s long history with Kettering General Hospital.” GSSArchitecture’s history with the hospital dates back over 100 years, with the founder of GSS, John Alfred Gotch, providing the designs for the initial site back in 1894. Since that time the hospital has grown
significantly, with the GSS designed former main hospital building now just a small section of the entire site.
