MEMBER ZONE MEMBERPROFILE
NAME: John Griff COMPANY: JG Media Services Ltd JOB TITLE: Owner
WHAT DOES YOUR ORGANISATION DO? JGMS offers bespoke media related solutions, including broadcast media training, coaching in public speaking, presentation training and general media consultancy. The business also offers full media production facilities, script and copy writing. I also offer myself as an event host and presenter, commentator and facilitator.
HOW DID IT ALL START? As a choirboy in Cambridge I toured extensively, made records and television specials and performed on network radio and TV. After school in the early 80s I began to broadcast in my own right – chiefly as a hobby – while also working for one of the high street banks. Back then, the business revolved around my own projects but has since widened into an offer to other clients.
WHAT’S YOUR GREATEST ACHIEVEMENT SO FAR? Commercially: being able to establish and maintain the business in a highly competitive market. Personally: a brief return to singing when I performed Bridge Over Troubled Water live on radio and in front of 14,000 Northampton Saints and Harlequins supporters during the half time break at Franklin’s Gardens for the BBC’s Children in Need!
WHAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE AT NIGHT? Not much – but the industry is in a period of significant change – keeping sharp and staying relevant is always a significant consideration.
WHAT HAS SURPRISED YOU MOST IN YOUR JOB? The power of personal endorsement – virtually all of JGMS’ turnover has come from either previous media interaction or word-of-mouth introduction.
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST RISK YOU’VE EVER TAKEN? I could have stayed in banking but after the death of my father a chance conversation with my then radio programme controller offered an opportunity to jump full time into broadcast media. Figuring that I was then sufficiently young and current in banking practice to switch back if broadcasting failed, I jumped – now (and a lot older!), I’m still developing in an industry I adore.
WHICH BUSINESS PERSON DO YOU MOST ADMIRE? My father – as a military man he impressed on me the importance of customer service, as well as being able to take and give orders.
WHAT EXCITING PROJECTS IS YOUR ORGANISATION WORKING ON? JGMS is currently embarked on a second series of podcasts for a national orchestra as well as a radio advertising campaign for a royal project. It’s also about to start producing two new podcast series for local businesses together with a refit of its studio facilities.
WHAT MADE YOU JOIN NORTHAMPTONSHIRE CHAMBER? During my banking career I was the bank’s regional small business adviser and I can see the potential to develop my own business by developing the professionalism of other Chamber members. There is significant benefit to be had by being part of the wider network – JGMS exists to help business develop its greatest asset – its people.
