TALKING BUSINESS
PLANS FOR GROWTH IN YEAR OF THE PENDRAGON
Pendragon Protect is set to expand even further as it enters the year of ‘TenDragon’ to celebrate its 10th anniversary. We spoke to company director ADAM KAPLAN about the firm’s rapid growth and its use of the Chamber network.
Pendragon Protect is probably as well known in business circles for its director, Adam Kaplan, as it is for its dedication to its clients. Adam is the driving force behind the company which he helped to launch in 2010 and took full control of two years ago. Instantly recognisable thanks to his eye-catching hairstyle, he’s a popular figure at Northamptonshire Chamber events and has a devoted following on LinkedIn who love to see where his Pendragon Pink branded merchandise will pop up next. Adam had been working as a mortgage and protection
advisor when the recession hit in 2008 and he was made redundant. He moved to a call centre, where he specialised in insurance. Buoyed by his success and rapport with clients Adam realised it was time to forge ahead with plans for his own business which specialises in life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection for individuals and businesses. “I always want to do the right thing by people and ensure my
clients have confidence in the policies recommended to them. For me it’s important that people feel comfortable that they’re getting the appropriate cover for them and that was the main motivation for me to launch Pendragon Protect,” explained Adam. Adam launched the firm with his business partner in April
2010 and went on to take control of the business in April 2018, joining Northamptonshire Chamber a few months later. Adam said: “I recognised there was a gap in the market because while individuals think about cover for themselves there are lots of business owners with hardly any protection for themselves, their families or their business. We’re always keen to help the big corporations but if anything, it’s the smaller businesses that are probably in even more need of our help in this instance. We want to bridge the gap between the numbers taking out personal insurance and those taking out business cover. “The last two years have been nothing short of amazing and
a big part of that has been the Chamber. There’s a wide membership to connect with and the access it provides to key businesses is huge. I like the flexibility of the Chamber’s networking calendar; I feel like I’m part of a big family and the support you get is fantastic. I’ve taken courses with other Chamber members to help me grow and used Chamber members as my suppliers. I like to do business with Chamber members I’ve got to know and trust. “Once I got my first bit of business through the Chamber, I
found more Chamber members started contacting us for help. Nearly half of my business now comes through referrals from

Chamber members. I never say to anyone ‘this is what I can do for your business’ – I talk to them about their company and build relationships. We showcase our experience through LinkedIn and our presentations. The majority of the time we save people money and get them better cover because we have access to a wide range of insurers whereas lots of other brokers are restricted to a small panel of insurers or are tied to just one insurer. Through brokers with restricted access, or those who are tied to one insurer, you’re likely to pay over the odds for your insurance policies. “We discuss everyone’s individual circumstances in full and
make recommendations that are tailored to our clients so they can be confident they have the appropriate cover and don’t have to worry about nasty surprises if they need to make a claim. If a client has cover already and it’s better for them to keep their existing policy that’s what we’ll advise them to do, however, most people don’t have the appropriate cover.” In 2019 the firm’s focus was on reinvestment in the business
and its brand and the company is looking to grow further in 2020 as it celebrates its 10th anniversary with its special ‘TenDragon’ branding. Adam said: “During 2019 we started work on our new
website, which is under development, we developed our recognisable Pendragon Pink branding which is on our new signs and merchandise such as our water bottles and jute bags. We wanted merchandise that was reusable so it’s environmentally friendly and whenever they pop up in our social media the posts are always popular. Everywhere I go people recognise the brand and recognise my hair! “To enable us to grow further I’ve invested in my colleague
Jade Evans who is currently training to become a fully qualified protection adviser. This is a massive benefit because lots of people in this industry aren’t qualified to do the job. “We will be looking to grow the business further in 2020 and
will take on more staff to support that. “If you wish to see if we can help you improve your existing
cover or you’re thinking about taking cover, please call us on 01604 807531.”
