Business Travel New trains are on track


Passengers in the West Midlands have been given a first glimpse of new trains which are coming to the region shortly. West Midlands Railway has ordered a total of 26


diesel trains - known in the rail industry as Class 196s – as part of a £800m investment in the region’s railway network. The trains - which are being built in two-car and


four-car formations – will be used to increase capacity on the busy line between Hereford and Birmingham. Eighty carriages will be constructed under the


project with the first batch now under construction by Spanish manufacturer CAF. The first are due to arrive in the UK in the spring,


with the remaining trains being manufactured at a purpose-built factory at Newport, south Wales. All units will undergo further testing here and in


Europe before entering passenger service in the second half of 2020.

West Midlands Railway, said: “The popularity of rail travel in the West Midlands is continuing to grow at a rapid rate, which is why we have pledged to invest £800m to help us keep up with demand. “It is exciting to see that this investment is starting


to come to fruition with our new Class 196 trains entering the track-testing stage before they begin arriving in the UK next year. “These smart, modern trains will boost capacity on


our network and come with features such as under- floor heating and extra luggage space, which I am certain will prove popular with passengers.”

United to replace Boeing 757-200s


United Airlines is to buy 50 new Airbus A321XLR aircraft, which will allow it to start retiring its existing fleet of Boeing 757-200s. The state-of-the-art aircraft,


which United expects to introduce into international service in 2024, will also allow United to serve additional destinations in Europe from its hubs in Newark/New York and Washington. Andrew Nocella, United’s


executive vice-president and chief commercial officer, said: “The new Airbus A321XLR aircraft is an ideal one-for-one replacement for the older, less-efficient aircraft currently operating between some of the most vital cities in our intercontinental network. “In addition to strengthening our


ability to fly more efficiently, the A321XLR’s range capabilities open potential new destinations to further develop our route network and provide customers with more options to travel the globe.” The next-generation A321XLR

will burn 30 per cent less fuel than previous generation aircraft, which will help enabling United achieve its goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 50 per cent relative by 2050.
