The Life Sciences Sector in Malta The most developed sector in the life sciences area in Malta is the production of generic pharmaceuticals. Malta also houses a number of companies operating in sensitive medical devices operations, such as Baxter and Cardinal Health. In order to encourage R&D, ME has developed the Life
Sciences Park, located alongside Malta’s main general hospital, university and medical school. This park houses companies such as Alvogen, engaged in supply chain management, intellectual property portfolio management, technology transfer services, quality control and global finance functions. Any pharmaceutical company manufacturing in Malta can also
make use of the services of the Malta Medicines Authority, which offers efficient and cost effective services and guidance as well as certification of GMPs. The Authority acts as a Reference Authority within the European Union. Today, the Authority is also one of the first eight European Inspectorates to be recognised by the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). In 2018, Malta regulated the production of medical cannabis
and today some of the most important manufacturers in the area of medical cannabis are setting up their own facilities in Malta. ME is now working to attract companies which will support manufacturers and can offer their products and services to other European jurisdictions.
The Education Industry in Malta While Malta is well known as a centre for the teaching of English as a foreign language, the country has been identified as an ideal base for universities catering for the large MENA region. These includes universities like Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London which offers undergraduate medical courses mainly to foreign students. Their new campus in Gozo was inaugurated in November 2019, with state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and research activities.
