Business News Team England unveil first sponsor

Gowling WLG has been revealed as the first official sponsor of Team England as it prepares its athletes to compete at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. The law firm has also been

appointed official legal advisers to Commonwealth Games England and will advise the company on a range of services including commercial and contract matters, employment law and data protection in the run up to Birmingham 2022. The Gowling WLG team, led by

partner and board member Stuart Young, will work alongside Commonwealth Games England chief executive Paul Blanchard as the organisation hopes to build on the success of Team England at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they won 136 medals, including 45 golds. The firm’s involvement spans its

international network, as Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP has also been appointed as the first official sponsor to Commonwealth Games Canada, supporting Team Canada’s preparation for Birmingham 2022.

David Fennell, chief executive at

Gowling WLG, said: “We’re excited to support Paul and Team England as they get ready for the unique opportunity of a home Games. This event will have the largest ever female and para-sport programme in Commonwealth Games history – thousands of hours of training has already begun as the athletes look to claim a place on the podium, and we are proud to be working

with them to help them achieve their goals. “There will be some healthy

competition across the firm as we keep an eye on the medal table at Birmingham 2022, and we’re looking forward to seeing who comes out on top between Team England and Team Canada.” Mr Blanchard said: “We’re

absolutely delighted to have Gowling WLG on board as our first

sponsor for Birmingham 2022. Heading into a home Games, this support will be invaluable to the athletes selected to represent their country. “Having Gowling WLG as our

official legal advisors for this cycle will help to ensure we can provide the best environment for our athletes to perform their best.”

Getting in trim: Team England County lose cricket boss to ECB

Neil Snowball, Warwickshire’s chief executive, has been selected as the new managing director of county cricket at the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and he will depart Edgbaston to take on his new role later in the year. Mr Snowball was appointed as Warwickshire chief

executive at the beginning of 2016 and he has overseen a period of considerable growth, innovation and success. Edgbaston Stadium has become renowned as one of

the best cricket venues in the world, having hosted the ICC Champions Trophy twice, staged the first ever day/night Test Match in England in 2017, while also cementing its position as the home of Vitality Blast Finals Day. In 2019, Edgbaston hosted five marquee fixtures in

the hugely successful ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, which eventually saw England crowned as champions, and it also staged a record-breaking Ashes Test match in the drawn series with Australia.

Mark McCafferty, Warwickshire CCC chairman, said: “We

are embarking on a new five-year strategy that will build on the success of 2019 and continuing our excellent partnership with Birmingham City Council and our other key stakeholders. The Board and I will commence a thorough process in order to identify and appoint a successor to Neil, who will remain in place over that period in order to ensure that there is an orderly transition.” Neil Snowball said: “We have an incredible group of

people at Warwickshire including the staff, players, members and supporters and this has been a difficult decision for me to make. However, I feel very proud of what we have achieved together over the last four years and I am confident that the club is in good shape both on and off the field.”

Bowling legend Bob remembered

Tributes were paid to Warwickshire and England cricket legend Bob Willis, who passed away at the age of 70. Willis, recognised as one of England’s greatest fast bowlers, joined the Bears in 1972 and went on to take 353 First Class wickets for the Edgbaston side at an average of 24.84. He also captained the club to a Sunday League title in 1980. With 325 wickets in 90 Test

matches, Willis is fourth in the list of the England’s leading Test wicket takers. He is fondly remembered for

his role in the 1981 Ashes series, his career-best 8-43 helping England to a famous win over Australia at Headingley.
