No doubt, you’ve heard about the FDA’s investigation into a potential link between certain pet food ingredients found in grain- free pet foods and the rare but deadly canine heart disease dilated cardiomyopathy DCM).
“There is no proven link between a
grain-free diet and DCM. More studies need to be done,” said Robert Downey, founder and CEO of Annamaet Petfoods. “Before 2014, we didn't have any of the statistics the FDA is sharing with the pub- lic about DCM. So they cannot say more dogs are being diagnosed with DCM. We have nothing to compare it to.” The article published in the Journal of
the American Veterinary Association (JAVMA) about DCM, earlier this year, was not peer reviewed. The authors, three veterinarians, avoided the peer review process by label- ing the article an op-ed, the one piece of writing that JAVMA doesn’t peer review. “I have to say that I am not surprised
that only a portion of the veterinary pro- fessionals were included in the FDA arti- cle,” said Anapatricia Garcia, DVM, PhD, owner of Dog Lovers Tarpon Springs. “There are not many scientific researchers working in this field so there is not enough scientific data to conclusively identify the direct cause of DCM in dogs with regards to diet. In addition, the genetic predisposition of many dog breeds to develop cardiac conditions creates an additional variable that will take a long time to clarify. There is not an unequivo- cal conclusion that shows cause-effect between food and DCM.”
