By the time Rob reached the cabin he was in shock.
“I was able to make it inside and called a friend who drove me 40 miles to the nearest hospital. After surgery and months of rehab, as I healed, my friends started calling me ‘Mr. Rugged.’ A few years later, when we were looking for names for our new grain-free formulas, we came across the word Manitok. We thought it had a nice ring to it and the fact that it meant “rugged” was a double meaning for me.” Today’s consumer is much more educated about pet
food than ever before. But, what concerns Rob is the con- tinual flood of misinformation that pervades the internet. “People get too caught up with the first ingredient
listed on the label, and forget the importance of the back end ingredients,” said Rob. Not all pet food manufacturers have the same level of
nutritional expertise and quality control. Rob believes that the link between diet and the DCM issue has more to do with poor quality ingredients. Great care is taken in the Annamaet Petfoods’
kitchens. All the meat and fish they use must be human- grade. Every ingredient is locally-sourced and non-GMO. The formulas are cooked in small batches at low temperatures, which helps preserve the nutritional values of the ingredients. The equipment is flushed between batches of the formula to eliminate cross contamination. Every batch is tested for salmonella. Randomly-selected samples are sent out regularly to independent labs to check the nutrient levels. More pet owners are learning about, and feeding their
dogs Annamaet Petfoods. “A lot of people say we’re the best kept secret in the pet industry,” said Rob. Maintaining a good relationship with their retailers is
another reason for the company’s ongoing success. “People can call our office and somebody will actually pick up the phone,” Rob said. “Our retailers tell us that once their customers switch to Annamaet Petfoods, they remain more loyal to the brand than any other product.” Because of their strong background in science, Rob
believes that educating and training their retailers’ staff is key. “We strive to build strong relationships with our independent retailers by providing in-depth staff training and support,” said Rob. As an outdoorsman, protecting the environment and
preserving its natural resources have been another of Rob’s lifelong pursuits. Annamaet recently introduced degrad- able and sustainable packaging for their food using a patented process called BioFlex. Unlike other solutions, BioFlex utilizes existing infrastructure and does not require consumers to change their habits in the way they discard the packaging. And, every 1,000 pounds of discarded BioFlex packaging can power a small electric vehicle for approximately 13,000 km or power a home for two years. Rob, who feeds his dogs every morning before going
to work, likes to say, “We’re not just feeding your pets. We’re feeding our pets too. And for that reason, Annamaet continues to ensure the peak of pet nutrition.”
