Animal shelters are becoming more than just places to surrender and/or adopt a family pet. Successful shelters are focused on meeting their goals within their mission statement. Management and board members are also prepared to bend with the ebb and flow of its community’s needs and that of the needs of the animals in their care. While that can be a challenge for open admission shel- ters like the Suncoast Humane Society in Englewood, Florida, it is also a reminder of how being open-minded can lead to new opportunities and partnerships. When Phil Snyder first became aware of
Fido Fixers, a non-profit provider of mobile spay-neuter vehicles to qualifying shelters, he contacted the founders. Phil, who has been the executive director of the Suncoast
34 THE NEW BARKER
Humane Society (SHS) since 2007, told us he simply wanted to start a conversation. One conversation turned into many over a couple of years. “I remained persistent in my pursuit of bringing a Fido Fixers unit to our community,” Phil told us during our recent tour of the shelter. While the board of Fido Fixers respected
the mission of Suncoast Humane Society, they weren’t convinced of the need. But Phil did not give up. After the shelter opened their own low cost clinic in 2009, he saw that it was going to be necessary to quickly expand their services. Even for those animal lovers willing to spay or neuter their pets, many live in economically disadvan- taged areas where access to veterinary care is limited.
