Reunited And It Feels So Right.
It started as a conversation between friends Shelley Heistand and Judy Charuhas. The mission of Winter Park Lost Pets has always been to reunite lost and found pets with their rightful owners. The community organization has reunited more than 2,000 pets since its inception in 2009. “We are different than national sites as we
are free,” said Judy. “There’s a voice at the end of the phone from someone familiar with our community, who will know how to assist you in helping you find your missing pet. We provide checklists on the website to assist people as well.” Winter Park Lost Pets (WPLP) consists
of city workers, runners, families, kids on bikes, retail merchants, police and fire depart- ment personnel, Amazon Prime drivers, FedEx drivers, school bus drivers, vets, shel- ters, groomers and pet related businesses. In 2011, Winter Park Mayor Ken Bradley
Nya, the 2000th
WinterParkLostPets.com pet reunited with her family.
said that WPLP is not only a lost and found pets website, “They are a community and we are so pleased they are part of our com- munity. They bring all types of pet lovers together for one cause.” Current Mayor Steve Leary agrees. “I’ve reunited a pet and know how great that feeling is – to get that pet back home!
I applaud their efforts and hard work; they are Winter Park’s first responders for missing pets.” Local veterinary practice, VCA Howell
Branch Animal Hospital, microchips any pet reunited through the site at no cost. Dr. James Burke said, “Microchipping helps reunite pets and we are happy to support Winter Park Lost Pets in their cause.” Judy notes that, “We offer free microchip-
ping at the yearly Winter Park Police Department National Night Out event with Orange County Animal Services providing the chip service. Our 501c3 The Lost Pets Foundation covers the cost of registering those chips. We also do all the paperwork.” In addition, WPLP offers free ID tags at
local pet stores and special events throughout the year. The 2,000th pet to be reunited is Nya, a savvy Boston Terrier who likes adventures.
WinterParkLostPets.com has not only reunited Nya once, but twice. It appears Nya has a knack for digging under anything to visit neighbors and friends. Editor’s Note: To Nya’s family, please see the DigDefence review in this issue of The New Barker on page 17.
