A fantastic start to the year for house builder


A Derby construction boss has announced an “epic” first half of the year as he laid the foundations for 168 new homes, including 16 at a brand new site in Ripley. Ian Hodgkinson, Director at Hodgkinson Builders, has not only started work on the new properties, his team has also trialled a brand new way of working to speed up the process. Ian, who co-founded the Access


Training Construction Academy earlier this year, said: “We are going great guns at the moment and have just completed a fantastic first half of the year. “We have trialled the use of


timber frames and liquid screed to speed up the efficiency of the build process at our development in Stoke and we hope to roll this out over at our site in Ripley.” The firm’s latest site, at


Butterley Hill, in Ripley, will consist of 16 affordable two- and three-


bed homes. It is being built on behalf of the Waterloo Housing Group, and is expected to be completed by March 2020. Ian, who saw his firm’s turnover


increase to record levels in 2019, said: “By using modern methods of building we can work on both the interior and exterior of a property at the same time, and the use of liquid screed means that several plots can be done in one day, which is phenomenal. We are building homes so fast that we are running out of land.” In addition to putting new


homes in the ground, Ian, whose business is set to appear on a demolition programme for TV channel Quest later this year, is paving the way for yet another housing development. He continued: “Most


construction firms are being affected by Brexit from a resources and staffing point of view. Many are struggling with the

lack of tradespeople coming from Europe, but we aren’t. “Our academy is providing the much-needed skilled workforce that we require, and from our 100- strong bricklaying workforce, 22 of those are a direct result of our training and academy, which is a testament to its success.”


New tax relief is made available


A new Structures and Buildings Allowance (SBA) is available to businesses incurring qualifying costs on new non-residential structures and buildings. Leicester-based chartered


accountants Newby Castleman has examined the implications and benefits of this tax relief. Announced at Budget 2018 and


introduced under the Finance Act 2019, the aim of the SBA is to relieve construction costs for new qualifying buildings and structures, to support business investment and boost the UK’s capital allowances system. Since the phasing out of the old Industrial Buildings Allowance, in 2011, capital allowances have not been available for expenditure on structures and buildings. With the introduction of the


SBA, where the first construction contract for the building or structure in question was entered into on or after 29 October 2018, the allowance is available on qualifying spend. SBA will still be given for periods during which properties fall into disuse. Lee Morton, Senior Manager at


Newby Castleman, said: “This tax relief can be expected to have a positive effect on UK business, as it will encourage businesses entitled to the allowance to consider investing – or increasing their investment – in the construction, conversion and renovation of non-residential structures and buildings.”


Expand and develop at Grow On Centre


A new office development which will help expanding businesses to develop and prosper has been officially named. The Harborough Grow On


Centre, (HGOC), based at Compass Point Business Park, off Northampton Road in Market Harborough, is expected to create 230 jobs and bring £20m into the district's economy. The project was funded by


Harborough District Council with support from the European Regional Development Fund and the Leicester and Leicestershire Enterprise Partnership. Construction of the new offices,


in partnership with Willmott Dixon, started in 2018 and was prompted by a strong requirement for growing SMEs looking for commercial space to expand. Cllr James Hallam, portfolio
