Support for the Armed Forces gets gold award

Chamber members Charnwood Borough Council and Rushcliffe Borough Council have achieved a Ministry of Defence Employer Recognition Scheme (ERS) Gold Award for actively demonstrating their support and advocacy for the Armed Forces community. Under the scheme, employers

support Defence personnel and encourage others to do the same. The award recipients employ members of the Armed Forces community and family members of those who serve. The initiative offers three levels

of awards – bronze, silver and gold – for organisations that pledge

their support to the Armed Forces. Ben Wallace, Secretary of State

for Defence, said: “These awards recognise the outstanding support for our armed forces from employers across Britain and I would like to thank and congratulate each and every one.” Johnny Mercer, Minister for

Defence People and Veterans, added: “Veterans make a huge contribution to businesses across the country and it’s fantastic to see a record breaking number of organisations recognised for their support.” The two local authorities were among five organisations across

The Charnwood and Rushcliffe Borough Councils teams showing their support for the Armed Forces

the East Midlands to achieve gold award status. Geoff Parker, Chief Executive at

Charnwood Borough Council, said: “Charnwood Borough Council is delighted to receive this Gold Defence Employer Recognition Award. Our successful partnership with Rushcliffe and Melton Borough Councils in this area of work to understand and recognise the personal sacrifice made by our

service men and women, reserve forces, families, veterans and adult cadet force leaders is an achievement in which I and many of my colleagues take great personal pride.”

Chesterfield Canal appeal is launched

A new appeal for funds has been launched to finish the restoration of a historic canal. The Chesterfield Canal Trust has launched the appeal, which will help it to complete the refurbishment of the last nine miles of the Chesterfield Canal. The trust hopes to complete the

final phase of work by 2027, to mark the 250th anniversary of the canal, which was completed in 1777. Mark Potter, the trust’s

Restoration Committee Chair, said: “These are very exciting times for the Chesterfield Canal. We hope that businesses and the general public will respond generously to our new appeal, as they have in the past, so that we can realise our dream of the canal being fully restored by its 250th anniversary.” The trust is now finalising plans

for the restoration of the remaining section, between Staveley and Kiveton Park.

It has appointed a full-time

development manager, George Rogers, who is working with partners, including the Canal & River Trust and Derbyshire County Council, to realise the trust’s bold ambitions for 2027. It is hoping its 2027 Restoration

Appeal will raise similar amounts of money to its last two campaigns, which raised a combined total of

more than £100,000. All the money donated will go directly towards the costs of restoring the canal. Businesses can contribute in

several ways, including one-off donations by cash, cheque or online, and monthly payments by standing order. Certified donations for larger

contributions will be acknowledged by a formal certificate at four
