Plymouth - The Hoe Seafront


Plymouth is Britain’s Ocean City with local, national & international sailing competitions including International Yacht Races, Champion Speed Boat competitions and more in Plymouth Sound.


There is a choice of marinas and moorings, repair yards, chandlers etc. For fun of the water there is leisure craft to hire, organised fishing trips, boat excursions and sailing/dingy clubs that welcome visitors.


For the foodies Plymouth has Michelin and Fish2Fork restaurants, plus an array of cuisine at dozens of venues, and for the shopper the city is a place to shop until you drop.


From the historic Barbican where the pilgrim fathers set sail aboard the Mayflower in 1620, there is a water taxi to the Mountbatten Sailing Centre and Mountbatten Tower plus yacht basins in the Turnchapel area. A ferry service operates to the iconic Royal William Yard noted for restaurants galleries and events, also to Cawsands in Southeast Cornwall.


There are boat trips to see the warships in the naval dockyard, and to cruise the rivers Tamar and Yelm. The Barbican hosts the Pirates Weekend and has many pubs, restaurants, speciality shops, galleries and a renowned clairvoyant.


Notably on the Barbican is CLAY ART where you can make things in clay, purchase items and so much more, this is a family and budding artists’ experience.


Plymouth Hoe has a War Memorial, Sir Francis Drake and various other statues, a Peace Garden and the iconic SMEATON’S TOWER with panoramic views of Southeast Cornwall and the English Channel.


A range of events take place here including the British Championship Firework Competition, MTV Crashes, fun fairs, marathons, festivals and much more. On the Hoe waterfront there are a range of cafes and restaurants with many being alfresco.


Also on the Hoe waterfront swimming at the Tinside Lido is safe with attendants, or wild swim from the small beach or rocks. Armada Way is the city’s central boulevard and piazza being the venue for various events and markets, like the hugely popular Food Fest and the Lord Mayors Day. Attractions and things to do in Plymouth include the Plymouth Gin Distillery where visitors can tour the distillery, Elizabethan House a 16th century Drake’s time warp experience.

The National Marine Aquarium a fascinating view of life beneath the surface of the sea. The Devonport Naval Heritage Centre to tour a decommissioned nuclear submarine. Plymouth Guildhall for a multitude of events and fayres . Theatre Royal Plymouth for various shows and the Pavilions for known artists and ice skating. The Plymouth Life Centre is a sport and fitness centre hosting national and international events.


The Warner Village is an entertainment complex and the SUPER TRAMP PARK is a great experience. The CLIP N CLIMB CENTRE is Plymouth’s newest attraction and an exciting experience.


Within a few miles of the city centre are the National Trust Saltram House, Dartmoor Zoo, Plym Valley Steam Rail, Paintball, and the Plymouth Karting Centre. The walking and cycling enthusiasts have the South West Coast Path, Route 27, Drake’s Trail, the Saltram Estate, plus a number of coastal trails on the periphery of the city.
