THE LIZARD The most southerly part of the British mainland is The Lizard Peninsula with a landscape of extensive heathland, cliffs, woodland, creeks and sandy beaches. The clean water attracts seals, dolphins, and basking sharks.
Going south from Falmouth Manaccan is a photogenic village with wooded lanes leading to Gillan Creek and the picturesque Helford River. On the coast at Porthallow Cove there are duck races, summer beach parties and more entertainment. The views across the mouth of the Helford and Fal rivers to the Roseland Peninsula are magnificent and there are walks to Nare Head and Nare Point.
St Keverne has band concerts and an annual Ox Roast, and nearby is Tregellast Barton with lakeside and woodland nature trails. Signposted from St. Keverne is Porthoustock with a sand and shingle beach, there is parking and toilets. There is also a signed inland route through the quarry workings of the former St Keverne Quarry.
Going up the coast toward Helston, Kynance Cove is one of the most painted and prettiest coves in Cornwall. Lizard Point to Housel Bay and Church Cove offer spectacular views.

Travelling south is the fishing village of Coverack with a beach, shops and a host of places serving Cornish fare. Entertainment includes the Coverack Singers, beach barbeques, an annual carnival, regatta, lifeboat day, and art club exhibitions. A little down the coast Kennack Sands is two fine sandy beaches offering safe bathing and challenging surf. Divers can explore the numerous reefs and wrecks along this coast. This is also a delightful part of the county for all manner of open air activities.
Ruan Minor & Cadgwith are fishing villages with cottages on the steep hillside of the cove. The south beach of Little Cove is the swimmers beach, with the east beach is for fishing boats and other small craft. Both beaches are quite rocky but sheltered and safe for families. Dogs are permitted on the east beach only. There are boat trips to visit the caves and Devils Frying Pan and in the summer there are fishing competitions, gig racing, barbeques and a regatta. Ruan Minor has an interesting church and a grocery shop and craft shop.
The most southerly village in Britain is Lizard Village with a pub and a number of shops, one of which is the award winning Anne’s Pasties for a delicious Cornish Pasty. To reach the sea from the village follow the directions to Lizard Point, parking is limited. Just east of Lizard Station there is a path to the Lion's Den collapsed sea-cave. West of the village Pentreath beach is a narrow strip of sand, pebbles and rocks. Caerthillian Cove is nearby and is popular with coast walkers.

The largest village on the Lizard is Mullion with an abundance of shops, places to eat and stay, several art galleries, and boats for hire. Nearby Mullion Cove has a picturesque working harbour where Mullion Head, home to colonies of various birds, can be seen offshore. Poldhu Cove has the Marconi Visitor Centre and a family beach. Seaward of the village Polurrian Cove has a sandy beach which is accessed via a walk along the cliffs or through the valley. Before reaching Helston our featured cove is Gunwalloe a fishing cove with a charming beach. The local church of St Winwaloe is known as the ‘Church of the Storms’. Helston - Home to the Furry Dance
Helston is renowned for the Helston Flora Dance, its impressive stone-sculpted buildings and ‘kennels’ (channels of water running down either side of the high street). Those interested in heritage can wander through narrow streets, or follow the Town Trail and visit Helston Museum to discover the town’s history. For those wishing to have a gastronomic experience there is ample choice, plus many pubs and an assortment of high street and bespoke shops.
For things to do, see and visit Helston has something throughout the year, the famous ‘Furry Dance’ on Flora Day is at the beginning of May when the whole town turns out to dance through the streets. The Freedom Parade at the beginning of June is an opportunity to share in the pride of the military personnel based on the outskirts of the town.
There is the Harvest Fayre in September to name just a few of the opportunities. Additionally there are weekly markets, theatre and music, a golf club, plus one of the few boating lakes in the county and a theme park on the outskirt of the town. The nearby village of Wendron is home to the Poldark Mine, used as a filming location for the TV Series.
