‘It’s encouraging to see that decision makers recognise the importance of a happy and highly- skilled workforce’

This thread of British optimism

continues with 59% of decision makers feeling that opportunities outweigh threats – a significantly higher proportion than compatriots in France (44%) and Germany (43%). The biggest opportunities identified by UK businesses are improving productivity, the adoption of new technologies and expansion of product or business lines.

British companies are open to

change, with nearly half (47%) seeing innovation as a growth opportunity. Nearly the same percentage of businesses in both France and Germany, meanwhile, see innovation as more of a means of survival (46%). Peter added: “UK businesses are

resilient and optimistic about their medium term growth prospects, despite current uncertainties. Compared to their European counterparts, UK companies see more opportunities and are more open to innovation and change.”

Nottingham Free School pupils during the careers week at GF Tomlinson

Pupils get glimpse into world of construction

Motivated pupils from Nottingham Free School learned about the many roles in the world of construction as part of an exciting careers week with Chamber member GF Tomlinson, which included a site tour of the Nottingham Castle restoration site. GF Tomlinson has been

partnered with the school since 2018 as part of its involvement in the Enterprise Adviser Network. During the summer, 21 students

from Year 10 donned hard hats to visit Nottingham Castle for a site

tour with the GF Tomlinson project team. After the tour, the pupils took part in a teambuilding activity to create their own designs for a new visitor centre and ‘tender’ for the contract. GF Tomlinson Framework Manager Craig Stopper, the school’s Enterprise Adviser, said: “Our long-standing relationship with Nottingham Free School has led to a really positive and collaborative careers scheme that has given students access to the construction industry.”
