CHAMBER NEWS Sector lead role for Chamber at LBF

The popular Leicester Business Festival celebrates its fifth anniversary when it returns next month and the Chamber is taking a leading role in this year’s proceedings. It has been confirmed as the

Festival’s official ‘Sector Lead’ for business support at the festival, which runs between 28 October and 8 November, at various venues across the city. This year, more than 125 individual events will run under the Leicester Business festival umbrella, split across ten key themes including manufacturing and engineering, marketing and creative, education and skills, professional services, property and construction, retail, tourism and hospitality, science and technology, and transport and logistics. Each area will be headed up by a

strategic ‘Sector Lead’, a champion for the industry which is a true leader in its field, with extensive knowledge and experience. As part of its role, the Chamber

will represent and promote Leicester Business Festival to its members and the wider business community, act as a spokesperson for the festival for media interviews, and act as conduit of communication between the sector and festival organisers. Chamber Chief Executive Scott

Knowles said: “Leicester Business Festival is a fantastic event that has grown in popularity over the past five years, so we are delighted to be giving our backing as a Sector Lead this year. “As the biggest business

representation organisation in the region, our key aim is to enhance East Midlands businesses and

Help for firms affected by Whaley Bridge woe

Businesses affected by the recent evacuation in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, are being offered a year’s free Chamber membership. People living in the Derbyshire town were asked to leave their homes

and businesses for nearly a week after the dam wall of Toddbrook Reservoir became unstable following heavy rain. More than 1,500 people were evacuated from Whaley Bridge, although a

small number refused to leave their properties despite a ‘danger to life’ flood warning issued by the Environment Agency as the dam’s fractured spillway threatened to burst. The Chamber is supporting businesses affected by the incident with one

year’s free membership, so they can access the full range of benefits as they look to get back on their feet and recover from the temporary close down. Any businesses wanting to tack advantage of the offer should call the Chamber’s membership team on 0333 320 0333 and quote ‘Whaley Bridge’.

Chamber Chief Executive Scott Knowles said: “The community of Whaley

Bridge was hit hard by recent event, with the town and its businesses effectively having to shut down for a week during the evacuation.

difficult and uncertain time, we are pleased to be offering free membership to any firms affected.” The Ministry for Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

said it had activated the scheme to reimburse local authorities for the costs they have paid out during the emergency. Businesses in the area will also be given £100,000 to cover uninsured

costs, while a further £150,000 will be given immediately to the local council, High Peak Borough Council – to ‘help the recovery of the local economy’, the Government has confirmed.

business festival and it is the second largest B2B [Business to Business] event in the UK. With an average of 7,000 attendees each year, it has continued on a journey of success - both in itself and for the region. It’s no coincidence that there has been an upward momentum since the Business Festival was introduced. It has

brought together like-minded people who all share a passion for the region and who know the benefits of working here.”
