Have you heard of Alpha? As well as being the fi rst letter of the Greek alphabet and a synonym for a fi rst or leading event, Alpha is also the name of a course which is run in churches, cafes, schools and homes throughout the world. The Alpha course explores the basics of the Christian faith. It is open to anyone, with faith or none, who is curious about faith in general and wishes to explore what the Christian faith is all about.
In the last eighteen months, the local Catholic Church has run two Alpha courses. The fi rst of which was held at St Anthony’s Parish Hall on York Road. Each course is unique but they follow a tried and tested formula which is based on food (because we all love to share food), a talk on an aspect of Christian faith and then conversation. Over the course of eleven weeks our ‘table’, the same group of eight people who shared the food, grew to know each other well, so although there were over 50 people attending the course, it was not a ‘threatening’ environment. Within our own little group we could confi dently exchange our thoughts and ideas on the subject of the evening.
Was it a success? It certainly seems to have been. Several of those attending have become part of the leadership team for the second Alpha course, and three ‘post-Alpha home groups’ now meet monthly. All would recommend it to others.
