Children’s Eyecare
With Summer underway, it’s a good idea to think about what needs to be sorted over the holidays.
Your optician can check the vision and health of your child’s eyes from an early age, so you certainly don’t need to wait until they can read letters. Even if you have good eyesight, your child should be regularly checked to ensure any diffi culties are picked up early.
The things to look out for in your child – which may indicate that their eyes may need checking – are rubbing their eyes; being clumsy, bumping into things or diffi culty in catching or kicking a ball; sitting very close to the TV or holding a reading book very close; refusing to read or having diffi culties concentrating; introverted behaviour or excessive ‘day-dreaming’; disruptive behaviour or a short attention span; complaining of headaches – most headaches aren’t eye related, though some children may have an uncorrected visual problem.
For all children under 19 (and still in full time education), the eye test is free on the NHS. They will also get a voucher towards the cost of a pair of spectacles.
The optician will let you know how often you need to visit. Usually for adults, every two years is fi ne, but they may suggest your child visits every six months or every year, depending on their particular needs.
Did you know that a registered dispensing optician is the best person to help you get glasses for your child? They
are trained to help you choose a frame that fi ts well, as well as one that your child likes. Beyond frames, there are different types of lenses available. Some children will benefi t from thinner lenses, while others will want stronger lenses and well-designed frames that make it safe to play sports.
Children’s faces change shape as they grow, so you may need to visit regularly for adjustments. Children also have smaller noses, so it can be harder to fi nd a great fi t. Ask your dispensing optician for advice. With frame ranges specifi cally designed for children, these will fi t better than scaled down versions of adult frames. The lenses have an optical centre, and your child should be looking through the centre of their lenses. If your child’s specs slip, they may experience distorted vision. The dispensing optician will check to ensure a perfect fi t.
Wearing glasses shouldn’t stop your child taking part in a whole range of sports. Your optician is trained to solve all sorts of eye wear issues, and knows the best frames and lenses to help your child. They can also discuss the option of contact lenses which may suit older children.
If you have any questions or need any eye care advice, ask your optician. They are there to help you.
