Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT)
Unfortunately we have seen an increase in car crime in Poole in recent weeks. Drivers Beware: REMOVE IT, LOCK IT!
Most vehicle crime is opportunistic and therefore could be prevented. If a thief thinks there is something value in your car, they will try their luck.
A thief may pass your vehicle and see an opportunity to make some quick cash by selling items you have left on display. You may not miss these, but the inconvenience of the possible damage caused to your vehicle by the thief gaining entry is far greater than the theft itself.
There are simple steps you can take to minimise your chances of becoming a victim of vehicle crime. The best advice is, don’t leave anything in your car.
• Keep your possessions and valuables safe. • Don’t leave anything on display in your car. Even a coat on the back seat is tempting for a thief.
• Take all your belongings with you when you leave the car. Don’t hide things in the boot/glovebox/door wells.
• Park in a garage if you have one or where possible, park your vehicle in a well-lit area with CCTV cameras.
• Leave a ‘no valuables in this vehicle’ sign on display. • Invest in a visible alarm system and security device such as steering locks and gearstick locks.
• Ensure all windows and doors are secure before you walk away.
• Take removable stereos, sat nav equipment and bags with you and wipe off any marks.
• Fit locking wheel nuts to protect your wheels and tyres. • Keep your keys in a safe place at all times and remove the ignition key every time you leave the car. It only takes a few seconds for a thief to jump in.
• Consider fi tting a tracking device. These enable a car to be tracked by the Police or system operator if stolen.
Please be vigilant and report anything suspicious to Dorset Police on 101, if a crime is progress or life is in danger dial 999.
