Four Seasons In One Day Advice for gardeners from Chestnut Nursery
Last month saw some untimely
weather. Heavy rains, high winds, bright hot sunshine and chilly nights, often on the same day.
Such fl uctuations don’t make ideal
conditions for growing and as a result some crops were
late establishing this year, which is brilliant
news, because it means we now have a wide range of hardy perennials, shrubs and exotics just coming into their prime.
Dazzling daisies come in all colours. Arctotis just keep on giving, fl owering with majestic profusion, they are ideal for pots and containers. Osteospemums are perfect for beds and borders, while erigerons cascade over walls and through gravel beds. Dreamy dahlias offer up surprising contrast with bright fl owers held on dark black foliage. Our salvias never fail to impress, and this year we welcome a new species, called Salvia nutans (pictured) – the ‘nodding sage’ – it’s quite unlike any other. The towering yet graceful plants have purple, pendant-like fl owers which hang in clusters at the top of long, long stems.
As always, we have a wide selection of southern hemisphere shrubs and exotics, many of which thrive in local conditions. We have often been tempted to grow a range of Australian eucalyptus trees, and this year we went for it. Now you can choose from six species. Each one is different to the other, but of equally high merit. One might say, a little like us…hooray!
