Cigarettes are the smoking gun linked to most adverse medical statistics. But what about the e-versions?
My scepticism for e-cigarettes and the habit of vaping has lifted recently. This is on account of two recent trials. The fi rst trial has shown that e-cigarettes are almost twice as effective at helping smokers give up tobacco than other alternatives, such as nicotine patches or gum. This was a randomised controlled trial (RCT), which is usually the most robust way to compare two treatments to see which works best.
While e-cigarettes are far less harmful than tobacco, the nicotine they contain is very addictive, so some young people may end up with an expensive habit that can be hard to break. However, e-cigarettes do not contain the burning carcinogens that tobacco cigarettes contain.
The second study provides survey data taken from more than 200,000 teenagers (aged 13 to 15 years) between 1998 and 2015. It looked at the impact of the recent surge in e-cigarette use.
teens who had ever tried smoking fell dramatically from 60% to 19% in that time, while regular smoking decreased from 19% to 5%. Only a quarter (25%) now think it’s acceptable to even try smoking, compared with nearly three-quarters in
1998. This suggests that the popularity of vaping has not ‘normalised’ smoking among teens.
There is no credible argument that can challenge the statement that quitting smoking is the best thing you can do for your health if you currently smoke.
