Broadstone Neighbourhood Watch Thank you to the many members of Broadstone
Neighbourhood Watch who attended our AGM at St Johns Church at the end of May. It was great to see so many people fully engaged with our community and keen to share experiences with our new Chief Inspector for Bournemouth and Poole.
One of the things that was clarifi ed for us all was that if we see a crime in progress, it is perfectly legitimate to ring 999, particularly if someone is liable to harm. When such calls are made, the call handler will decide on prioritising calls, according to their seriousness and based upon other calls being handled at the time.
If the call is genuine, and the risk is real, the police will not criticise such a call. Where an incident is not live and there is no personal harm, the call should be made to 101 or a submission made through the Police website. Many residents have concerns about sharing photographs and videos, feeling that there might be problems over data protection and privacy. We have had assurance that it is incredibly helpful to upload this information to the police website, particularly where the information might demonstrate a pattern of behaviour.
If you do not fi nd accessing the website easy, it is also possible to
email the police or even request a call back. Simply go to the police website at
www.dorset.police.uk for more information. If you do not have access to a computer, there is free access available at the library and staff there can help to get you online.
This time of year often sees a spike in anti-social behaviour as the evenings are longer and some of the young people who are sometimes involved will have more time on their hands. I hope that parents will help their children to appreciate the impact of some of their behaviours and encourage them to moderate their sometimes inappropriate language, and that the community will show some tolerance around what is perfectly reasonable – in terms of groups spending time enjoying each other’s company. May I also ask residents to keep a watch on our open spaces, especially the heathlands, which are at higher risk of damage if and when the weather warms up.
