Poole Athletic Club
Individual achievements: Athletics is largely a sport in which the individual achieves the best they can physically do – with some mental assistance (PB)! But being part of a TEAM, whether that be just four in a relay team or fi fty in a League team, can give a collective boost to all concerned. On May 26, after ‘Westminster Mile’ races all day, Melissa Courtney won the race for Elite Women in 4-31, beating her GB team-mate, Scot Laura Muir, into third. In the W5000m race in the televised Stockholm Diamond League meeting the following Thursday, won by Laura Muir, Melissa ran 14-53.82 in placing 8th of the 13 runners. This was a PB and a Club Record but also beat the 5000m qualifying times for the World Athletics Championships in Doha in September this year; and for the 32nd Olympics in Tokyo in August 2020! Brilliant !
Two others passing personal milestones were SM Jamie Grose, beating six minutes for the 2000m Steeplechase in Sport City in June; and u20M Adam Booth passing 6,000 points in the Decathlon at the England Athletics event in May. Five PBs helped him to 6,132 points (10th of 22 athletes).
And so to our Team fortunes: Team Dorset had a great home win at Ashdown in May, maintaining our lead ranking in the UK Youth Development League
Lower Age-Group (UKYDL LAG for u13s and u15s) division South West 2A. We have also been involved in the Southern League Match 2 at Winchester (as Team Dorset seniors), and organising a 5-mile Dorset Road Race League race in May 19, on the Ashdown track.
Again as Team Dorset, we ranked 4th in Match 2 of the UKYDL Upper-Age-Group (UAG for u17s and u20s). This maintains our status in division South/Southern 2B.
As a club, a big target is the South-West League with four matches at Exeter. The June match, featuring 12 clubs in a 7-hour programme showed us ranking 6th, with the u13G being our most successful section.
In June, athletes tried to reach the tough English Schools’ (ESAA) ‘Entry Standards’ to represent the County in the All-England Championships in July. At the County event at King’s Park PAC had 12 winners including two achieving Club and Championship Records, namely Fleur Mansell in the IG Triple Jump (11.14m), and Dan Sanchez (pictured right) in the JB 200m (23.3). Liam Nixon (left) was another of our champions.
