Book recalls historic year of Bears cricket
By Dan Harrison
A new book documenting Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s historic treble-winning season is released this month. ‘The Greatest
Season’, written by renowned sports broadcaster and author Pat Murphy, provides the inside story of the 1994 season in which The Bears won the County Championship, Benson and Hedges Cup and Sunday League trophies. Long-time BBC football and
cricket correspondent Murphy has revisited the triumphant campaign by speaking to many of the key figures including Warwickshire players, backroom staff and opponents.
24 CHAMBERLINK April 2019 The 1994 season is also
remembered for Brian Lara’s world record innings of 501 not out against Durham at Edgbaston. Murphy said: “The 1994
experience with Warwickshire was one of the happiest times of my working career. “There were better
county sides in terms of top quality players but, if you look at a 40- year span when four trophies were available, nobody comes close to Warwickshire. “There were two
separate areas that had
to be covered in the book. I spoke to about 30 opposition players, to assess the professional respect from the other counties. “But I also wanted to talk to
backroom people, like Keith Cook who is Warwickshire’s ‘Mr Fix-it’,

Dennis Amis, the chief executive, Stuart Nottingham, the physio, and Roy French, the dressing room attendant. “I wanted to get an all-round
picture of the club as it was at the time.”
Among the contributors to the
book was former Bears fast bowler Tim Munton, who took 81 wickets in the 1994 season. He said: “I’m really
looking forward to seeing the book as it has been a great journey remembering some of the fondest memories of our lives. “It was probably the best year of
my life and thanks to Pat’s book it is something we’ve all been able to talk about quite a lot over the past few months.” Published by Fairfield Books, The Greatest Season is out on 11 April.
and blogs to the campaign and participating in our Chamber Podcast mini-series. “We are proud to see the impact
which Growth Through People continues to have on the companies we work with. “In the coming months we will be assessing and publishing
original research arising from the campaign, and we look forward to sharing this with local and national stakeholders as invaluable insight for boosting business productivity.”
