65 Book Review Recommended new books available now from the Kingsbridge Harbour Bookshop

‘SCRATCH – A SALCOMBE BOY’ by Bill ‘Scratch’ Hitchen What an adventure! Take a trip down memory lane with the names and faces who were living and working along the Salcombe Estuary in the 1950’s & 1960’s then spin out on the high seas to voyage across the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic oceans. Scratch returned to South Devon in 1973 and spent the next three decades fishing and working in every sea area from Dover to Rockall. A highly entertaining book and a real pleasure to recommend.

‘REFLECTIONS’ by Marcia Willett – Hardback – Set in Salcombe! After her husband dies, Cara no longer wishes to live in their London home. On impulse, she sells it and goes to stay with her brother in Salcombe, Devon. Cosmo has also escaped from life in the city and meets a local girl, Amy. But is he being entirely truthful about what he’s left behind? Just out of university, Sam has passed the Admiralty Interview Board and is set to follow in his naval father’s footsteps. His future is secure - but he feels cast adrift. Reflections ebb and flow as the estuary meets the sea and Cara, Cosmo and Sam learn that for everything lost, there is something to be gained. Bestselling author Marcia Willett will be at the Harbour Book- shop on May 11th from 10:30am – 12:30pm for a book signing.

‘UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN’ by Donna Leon - Hardback The newest instalment of the Detective Brunetti series sees us back in Venice where he agrees to investigate the seemingly innocent wish of the elderly and childless Gonzalo to adopt a younger man as his son. Under Italian inheritance laws, this man would become the sole heir to Gonzalo’s substantial fortune, something which Gonzalo’s friends find appalling. Not long after Brunetti meets with Gonzalo, the elderly man unexpectedly passes away from natural causes. Old and frail, Gonzalo’s death goes unquestioned. But when Berta, one of Gonzalo’s closest confidantes, is strangled in her hotel room, Brunetti is drawn into long-buried secrets from Gonzalo’s past. It is such a wonderful feeling when you find an author you

enjoy and discover that they have written a substantial body of work. This is the 28th book in this enjoyable series set against the ebb and flow of Venetian life. Viva Brunetti!

‘CHARLES DARWIN’S ON THE ORIGIN OF

SPECIES’ retold by Sabina Radeva – Hardback There are fantastic non-fiction books for children at the moment and this one is a particularly good example. Beautifully illustrated and a marvellous mix of history, nature and biography, it explains the core ideas behind Darwin’s theories. It strikes an excellent balance between information and entertainment and is a real hit in the bookshop.

There are wonderful books due for release within the next month. We are especially looking forward to ‘Pond Life’ by John Lewis-Stempel, ‘Warlight’ by Michael Ondaatje and ‘A Summer of No Regrets’ by Kate Mallinder.
