39 Natalie explained: “South Hams has always had
a high recycling rate despite a lot of narrow access points and difficult areas to collect from, particularly in towns like Dartmouth and Salcombe. “However, we’re always meeting targets and South
Hams residents are very good at recycling. We recycle 54 per cent of waste, way above the average recycling rate for England of 45 per cent. This puts the district au- thority in 36th place out of 222 collection authorities. “I think residents will be really happy with the extra
recycling opportunities the Devon Aligned Service will provide. “Following an online survey of what residents want
we’ll also likely be moving away from sacks, especial- ly as they’re non-recyclable, to a box system. Exact containers are yet to be decided but the council has agreed to move swiftly to get everything in place for the improved service to start in September 2020.” Natalie said her job is all about encouraging people
to “reduce, reuse and recycle”. She said: “It’s a great environment to work in and it
really feels like we’re making a difference. “There’s been a behaviour change in recent years and people are becoming more environmentally aware. The David Attenborough Blue Planet effect has made people become more interested and wanting to do more. “There’s definitely a sense of public awareness
growing so the more we do to help people the better.”•
