The Post at Work Aune Valley
BUTCHER, FARM SHOP AND CAFE AT LODDISWELL
Aune Valley is a family business located in a great spot between Loddiswell and Kingsbridge. It incorporates Aune Valley Meat and Valley View Café. The third generation of a local farming family – Emily, Amy and Richard – are now managing the day-to-day running of the company. Kate Cotton caught up with them to find out more.
Emily Davis OFFICE MANAGER
our own area to work on and we can come together and help each other if there’s a problem.
What’s the best thing about working in a family business? Working closely with your siblings, having the close relationships and being able to support each other. It’s really nice to have support from each other.
How long have you been working in the office? The business has been in our family for about 30 years and I’ve been working in the office for around 12 years.
How did Aune Valley evolve? Originally my granddad Alan, who was a farmer, had a little shack and sold his own farm produce from it over 30 years ago. Mum and dad (Sue and Richard Winzer), also farmers, ran it for years. They knocked down one of the farm buildings and built a shop and it’s grown from there. They’re still involved but it’s more the three of us now – me; my sister Amy running the café with her partner Richard; and our brother Richard running the meat side of things.
What’s it like working with family? It works really well. All three of us – Richard, Amy and myself – have got
And the worst..? There’s the odd sibling rivalry of course, but it doesn’t happen very often.
How many staff work at Aune Valley? There are 30 in total across the office, shop, deli, café and the shop in Modbury. There’s sometimes extra staff in the summer.
What happens in the Aune Valley office? We oversee the whole business really – the general running of all the accounts, where the money’s going, making sure everything is running smoothly etc. I used to do it all on my own but now there’s three of us – me, Siobhan and Sophie.
What’s a typical day in the office like? It’s crazy and very full on. There are never enough hours in the day. I work 9am to 3pm so I can be there for my three children before and after school. I’m often
rushing out the door after a busy day and taking work home with me to do in the evening when the children are in bed.
What’s it like growing up on a farm? I grew up on my parent’s farm near California Cross and loved it. You have lots of freedom and space to entertain yourself. I live in Kingsbridge town now but my children spend a lot of time with mum and dad to keep that farm connection.
Are there any future plans for the business? We’re looking to expand the building by putting an extension on the front for more retail space. The cafe will be extended too to provide 15 more covers inside.
What would be your dream getaway? Somewhere peaceful and quiet, a nice spa break perhaps. Or a family holiday to Florida.
What do you listen to on your way to work? Heart Radio or tunes from my phone on the car CD player.
