FROM Fat TO W

ell, let’s be realistic…FIT-TER and hopefully rather less

fat. You can only achieve so much in a year and you do have to look at what you are starting with - an overweight, unhealthy, unfit 62 year old with no regular exercise routine, some medical factors to be consid- ered, and a love of fine dining. However, despite a variety of failed

attempts in the past, this time I have a (not so) secret weapon – Claire Boyt of Breathe Fitness. Now, I never thought the day would come when I would say I have a Personal Trainer but I do… and with Claire’s help, I am aiming to be a new woman this time next year. I have a personal goal – celebrat- ing a very special birthday with a dear friend on the French Riviera in June 2020 – and am determined to look better for that than I do now but I am also conscious that I am not getting any younger and if I don’t ‘take myself in hand’, I am heading for a miserable old age. Dieting alone is not the answer but

how do you know what exercises you should be doing? This is the woman who fell asleep in Yoga class, twisted her ankle in Step, and very nearly drowned in Aquafit! Clearly I needed professional

help… (and the added motivation of several thousand readers check- ing up on me every other month – no pressure there then). So for every woman who has ever despaired at the supermodels in the gym who make you feel utterly dis- heartened and dispirited, here is my real life story of how Claire and I are going to improve my fitness; have a positive effect on my general health and wellbeing; help me shape up, shed a few stones and drop some dress sizes. Because if I can do it, anyone can! Claire and I have had several con-

versations to enable her to carefully plan my regime with her around my physical limitations, taking into consideration any health restric- tions, and understandably insisting I obtain GP approval beforehand,

and so we feel comfortable working together – an important factor as we are going to be seeing a great deal of each other over the next 12 months. Friday 1st March 2019 was my first session, in the sunshine at Bow- combe Creek – how much better does it get? And, so you can keep track of my progress in each issue, here are the starting statistics:-

Meet Amanda’s personal trainer Claire Boyt

A personal trainer based in Kingsbridge, my passion is health, fitness and nutrition. I set up my company Breathe Fitness to promote and encourage people of all ages, abilities and experience to adopt a more healthy lifestyle. Everyone deserves the opportunity to feel fit, strong and confident in their own skin and I believe that by doing exercise we can create a connection between mind, body and our environment which is essential for mental and physical health. Amanda is at the beginning of her fitness journey and so, before starting sessions, we have discussed her goals and needs and we have created a plan to support her in achieving these. Amanda has also consulted her Doctor before we began to ensure the programme is suitable.

In our initial sessions we are working together closely to assess her current fitness levels and ability. During the first few months we will be working on increasing her flexibilty, balance and bone density by using gentle resistance and body weight exercises. We will also be aiming to increase her cardiovascular endurance by planning walking and stair climbing exercises. We are hoping to work outside for the majority of the sessions so we may get rather wet at times but I feel it is important to get outside as much as possible and work in a variety of locations to keep the sessions fresh and fun. Taking those first steps to fitness can be chal- lenging and so by using a personal trainer I can encourage and guide Amanda in making those changes and building new healthy habits.
