The Post test rides the Ghost Hybride Square Trekking B5.8 AL

was disappointed (writes Mark Simpson) when I test rode the Ghost Hybride Square Trekking B5.8 AL

from Puffing Billy Cycles around Wrangaton last month… I couldn’t find a steep enough hill! So impressive is this bike, that I couldn’t really test it … and myself... to the limit. Now, I am known on occasion

to don a bit of lycra and battle up and down local South Devon hills in an effort to improve my fitness. But being the wrong side of 60 yrs, this can be pretty tough and can easily exhaust my reserves after a couple of hours despite being reasonably fit. I know, however, that on this e-bike, I could go much further and for longer, and enjoy it! That’s not to say that riding an

e-bike is a fitness cop-out – you can still get the heart rate up and the lungs working harder – but it extends the possibility of going further or even attempt- ing many local rides, and hills, that you wouldn’t or- dinarily con- template. The health benefits

of cycling and exercise outdoors are well documented – it’s just that this e-bike will encourage you to use your bike more – be it simply for pleasure or for everyday transport. As far as hills go – where’s there’s a hill, there’s a way! The right e-bike will mean you can cover more miles than you could before or get to those ‘top of the hill’ viewpoints for which you’ve not usually got the energy. Electric bikes are also great for rehab after surgery or injury enabling you to ride around using as much energy as you want but quickening the time it takes you to recover. The Ghost Hybride trekking

range of e-bikes that I tested uses the high-performance Bosch eBike

“ it extends the possibility of going further or even attempting many local rides, and hills, that you

wouldn’t ordinarily contemplate. “

System which Puffing Billy Cycles strongly recommends. If you’re feeling energetic just turn off the electric mode but relax in the knowledge that when you need an extra boost you can experi- ence the Uphill Flow interactively by switching to any one of the four cycling modes, from light to turbo power. The bike I tested was the top of the range – strong, comfortable and a nice clean look – and very well equipped with Shimano gears and Tektro disc brakes, integrated lights, inter- nally routed cables, mudguards, stand and a carrier with a carrying capacity up to 25kgs. The 500Wh Bosch Power Pack is more than capable of tackling the steepest of Dartmoor hills. The bike’s sturdy feel meant that you also feel safer going downhill especially given the deteriorating state of many of our roads around Devon. The £3,099 price of this top-of-

the-range example is not cheap but I bet you’ll use it more than many bikes (manual and electric) over a lifetime of ownership and feel heathier for it! Nonetheless, Puffing Billy Cycles has many oth- er examples of e-bikes to fit your budget and there’s full service and mechanical support as well as a strong warranty to back-up your purchase. You can even order your e-bike online – visit their website www.puffingbillycycles.uk
