BUSINESS REPORT SHOE MAKER STEPS THINGS UP

After months of development, an award-winning shoe manufacturer has shared its new website with customers across the globe. Barker Shoes Ltd’s new site provides customers with an

enhanced online shopping experience as they decide which Barker style to add to their collection. Customers can filter their searches to find exactly what

they are looking for and the visuals incorporated into the website allow customers to view a particular style, in its colour and material variations, as if the options were sitting in front of them. Managing director Alan Pringle said: “Alongside

‘WATCHING

developing the customers’ online shopping experience we felt this was the perfect opportunity to ‘let the customer in’ to the Barker factory, albeit, virtually. Filming our craftspeople as they worked, skilfully constructing the shoes through complex operations. “Watching this incredible footage will give customers the feeling that

we still get when we look at a pair of Barker Shoes, an immense amount of pride in knowing how the shoes have been made, the hands that crafted them and the satisfaction of understanding what they’re investing their hard-earned money in to.” The firm has also released its new Spring Summer collection which

offers intricate detailing, luxury materials and style in abundance ready for the fairer-weather. Alan added: “There are some truly marvellous new additions which can

easily be found in the SS19 section of our website. This collection also incorporates bold designs and options for the more ‘daring’ individual.”

HAULAGE FIRM EXPANDS FLEET

A family-run ‘one-stop-shop operation’ for transport and warehousing is expanding its fleet. The UK’s oldest independent

haulage company, Wreford’s Transport, started from humble beginnings with a horse and cart in 1904 and is today conveniently located in Northampton with easy access to the M1 corridor from where it services the UK mainland on a daily basis, offering both a dedicated and groupage facility. As part of the company’s

HELP MATCH FUND ICONIC HOME

Chamber members have been urged to help one of England’s most iconic homes to raise £200,000 in match funding. 78 Derngate in Northampton is the only house in

England designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and is an award-winning visitor attraction. The Charles Rennie Mackintosh House & Galleries has

been pledged £200,000 by Northampton Borough Council to enhance the visitor experience at 78 Derngate and the organisation is hoping Chamber members can help it to double that amount. Les Patterson, secretary to the trust, said: “The house

has been open to the public since November 2003 and on average we have approximately 9,000 visitors a year but we would like very much to see an increase in that number. We plan to enlarge the existing atrium to facilitate an increased shopping area, a new reception area and tearoom and provide a new

exhibition/performance space at mezzanine level. At the same time it will provide better permanent disabled access. “As a self-funded charity, we depend on trading to

survive and believe that this plan will produce greater income and lower costs, making the venue much more sustainable. “Chamber members can help us by hiring our

conference room, promoting our venue to their staff, using our shop or placing orders online or by making donations. Our aim is to match fund the £200,000 by the summer and so we are asking supporters to donate in units of £100. For each £100 the donors’ names will be recognised on engraved glass panelling located in the new atrium.”

expansion plan it recently took delivery of five new MAN TGX to complement its existing fleet, with three more new MAN rigid vehicles due for delivery in March. The firm has also recently

acquired another 62,000 sq ft of warehousing space, to enable it to deal with the ever increasing demand for its warehousing services. Wreford’s business development manager Maxine Thornton said: "Wreford’s Warehousing now boasts over 200,000 sq ft of both serviced and occupied warehousing space in Northampton across three sites, and we are pleased to be adding to our existing portfolio of fantastic clients with whom we already have long standing and great relationships. As a company we are aware of the need to be ready to rise to the challenge of keeping goods moving.”
