MOTORING

the Edge Giving you the

this Christmas

We all know that December can be a busy month for travelling in the car. One car that offers space, practicality and diesel power is the five- seat Ford Edge. We sent motoring journalist Nick Jones out to see if Ford’s SUV can fit the bill.

It’s the first big SUV from the blue oval for over 20 years and consequently surpasses both the Kuga and the EcoSport in terms of size, so it will need a powerful engine to get things moving. It certainly doesn’t disappoint, offering two turbo

2.0-litre diesel units – one with 180 horsepower mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, or a more powerful 210 horsepower bi-turbo that has an automatic as standard. I’d imagine for pottering around in, the lesser of the

two engines is pretty useful around built-up areas, and cruising at 70mph it could manage all day. Move up to mine here – the larger power-output unit – and things suddenly become sharper and brisker and the Edge has an impressive turn of speed when asked. Ride quality is good, very little noise at any speed apparent, and despite riding on 20-inch alloy wheels, the ST-Line version is both supple and comfortable. The Edge has a lofty seat position that both I and

SUV buyers simply love, giving a commanding view of the road ahead. My seat has electronically-adjustable positions, as does the steering wheel to get that perfect posture – as an overall rating goes, it’s really hard to beat in all mannerisms. I’m not going to go into too much detail here about

all the buttons and switches and their practicality, but the eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system works rather well and is easy to use and understand. Space and practicality internally is noticeable; lots of room in the front, with the rear seats offering room for

three adults to sit side-by-side comfortably with lots of head and legroom – despite it having a panoramic sunroof. A golf trip with a friend showed how much space the

Edge offered – it swallowed two sets of clubs and two trolleys plus all the luggage quite comfortably over a relatively long distance and duration. Choose either of the engine options and you’ll not be disappointed with both economy and emissions – which, in fact, makes it a viable option not just for a private purchase but also a company one. So there we go – a new horizon for Ford and a sure-

fire winner on all counts… perfect for the long family outings buying and delivering presents this month.
