Martin takes top job at Nottinghamshire College
A senior leader with more than 35 years’ experience in the further education sector is set to take on the top job at West Nottinghamshire College. Martin Sim has been
appointed as interim Principal and Chief Executive after impressing governors with his ambitions for the college. He officially joined the
organisation in November, succeeding Dame Asha Khemka, who stepped down after 12 years at the helm. Mr Sim arrives with a wealth
of knowledge and expertise in the FE and skills sector, having begun his career as a college tutor before undertaking a host of middle management and senior leadership positions; overseeing areas including management information systems (MIS), IT, curriculum and quality in assistant principal and vice-principal roles. He progressed to become
Principal and Chief Executive of Salford City College in 2010, where he previously served as Deputy Principal following its creation from a three-college merger. Since retiring from Salford in
2015, he has specialised as an interim principal. He said: “I am delighted to
lead West Nottinghamshire College and work with its talented students and committed staff and governors. This is a good college, with an excellent reputation in the locality, and my main priority is to ensure it remains a vital asset to the communities of Mansfield and Ashfield.”
Jane Jones joins audit team at Grant Thornton
The East Midlands regional office of Grant Thornton has boosted its audit team with the appointment of Jane Jones as Associate Director. A highly experienced auditor,
Jane joins following 20 years as a senior manager with PwC. In the new role she will deliver
advice and specialist audit services to the firm’s comprehensive portfolio of commercial clients, as well as pension audits for privately owned businesses. She said: “I am looking
forward to working with the Leicester-based team and the wider firm. I have long been impressed by the firm’s culture, and the new role is a great opportunity for me to be part of a strong, committed team, in what is set to be a varied and interesting role.”
New Managing Director appointed at CoMech
East Midlands-based CoMech has appointed Craig Burton, formerly of Bombardier, as its new Managing Director. Renowned for providing highly- specialised measurement and calibration solutions in the rail industry, CoMech has appointed Craig to drive growth and focus on cultivating new partnerships and innovation. The firm’s previous MD and
owner, Keith Pallett, who is now pursuing projects and acquisitions which will bring additional services into the wider CoMech group, will remain a key figure within the business and made the handover official.
Speaking about the move, Mr
Pallett said: “The rail industry is going through a period of transformation, and we have an important role to play in providing our customers with the expertise and support to ensure its future remains strong. “We have invested considerably
in our personnel and technologies over the years, expanding into new facilities in our laboratories, web- based asset management, online retail and new administration offices at Derby’s Rail Technology Centre.
“Under Craig’s experienced
leadership, and with the appointment of additional key staff, we are all focused on further developing our brand and offering; these are exciting times. “With Craig’s experience and
understanding of the company’s operations and culture, Craig is

uniquely positioned to take over as Managing Director.” Craig, who began his career as
an electrical engineer at Bombardier, added: “CoMech has a long and storied history, and with more than 20 years’ experience in the rail industry I am thrilled to be joining a team that shares the same
drive, passion and perspective. “In addition to having roots
firmly in the rail sector, CoMech has been servicing safety-critical industries in the field of metrology for more than 25 years. I look forward to another 25 years of continued success and exciting opportunities.”
Family firm announces expansion
Wathall’s, Derby’s long- established funeral directors, has expanded its team with four new appointments. Greg Martin, Faye Evans and
Anita Fenton have joined the company as funeral arrangers – working across the four offices in Derby city centre, Borrowash, Alvaston and Ashbourne. Kaylee Dicken has also joined as a purchase ledger clerk. Wathall’s, which celebrates its
160th anniversary this year, has also expanded its Alvaston office with the opening of the new Wathall’s Memorials Showroom. Managing Director Helen Wathall
is the fifth generation of the family to head up the funeral directors business.
