Fallen heroes of local brewery honoured by lasting memorial

Ilkeston-based housebuilder Fairgrove Homes has unveiled a commemorative plaque in the town of Kimberley to remember local heroes of the First World War – as the nation marked 100 years since the signing of the armistice. A special service was held on the morning of Sunday 11 November before the Remembrance Day parade through the town and the service continued outside the newly renovated War Memorial. The plaque, commissioned by

Fairgrove Homes, was dedicated by the Rev Barbara Holbrook during the service before being unveiled in its new home in the former brewery yard by MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry. Fairgrove Homes MD Steve

Midgley said: “During our research we became aware of a Roll of Honour which used to hang in the Board Room and so with the WW1 centenary celebrations this year we thought it would be a good time to make this a permanent memorial to those brewery workers who fought for their country. “Our work to redevelop the Hardys and Hansons Kimberley

Brewery site is one of our flagship developments from our 25 years in business. To never forget those men who left the brewery to fight is important for the local community and the wider 100 years commemorations.” Following the revealing of the

plaque, MP for Broxtowe, Anna Soubry, said: “It is an honour to unveil this plaque which

remembers those men that answered their country’s call during the biggest war this world had witnessed to this point. “We must extend significant

gratitude to Fairgrove Homes and all those that have worked hard and invested money in order to make this tribute a reality - ensuring these men are remembered for years to come.”
