THE FIRST WORD
Welcome to the December/January edition of Business Network. As we rapidly approach the festive period, the focus on the Retail sector
intensifies, and this is the theme for this edition. It’s been another year of challenges for the Retail sector, with many large and
established names struggling as the climate continues to change with ecommerce continuing to gain traction, as it has for a number of years now. In this edition, we speak with Adam Tamsett, General Manager of intu Derby, about
his expectations for the festive period and what intu is doing to stay relevant and at the centre of community life. intu owns 15 shopping centres in prime locations across the UK and three of the
top ten shopping centres in Spain, so to get Adam’s insight makes for interesting reading. We also hear from Masson Mills in the focus feature section. Masson Mill was originally built by Richard Arkwright in 1783 and has reinvented itself over the years and is now a popular shopping attraction. Again, it’s very interesting to see how it is evolving – as it has done many times – to meet the demands of 21st Century consumers in an ever-changing climate. Alongside the usual excellent contributions from Chamber members, one piece in
this edition is, in my opinion, a particularly good read – how the employee of a Chamber member is successfully combining her professional role as a marketing manager with being a world-renowned athlete; having won Bronze in the European Championships in Berlin earlier this year… inspiring stuff. If you have a piece – or an idea – that you would like considering for a future edition, email
magazine@emc-dnl.co.uk or call me on 0333 320 0333 ext 2089.
Best wishes, Nathan Fearn Editor, Business Network
