As the UK manufacturing sector moves into a new era driven by rapid changes in technology, Business Network explores what the future could hold for the East Midlands manufacturing industry.


The East Midlands is part of one of the leading manufacturing nations, with British manufacturers seeing product sales of £364.7bn in 2016, according to the Office for National Statistics. Within the East Midlands, renowned for its ability to


successfully make things and then ship across the world, manufacturing is worth £15.9bn and employs 293,000. However, recent figures highlight a talent drought in the industry – backed up by the Chamber’s own comprehensive Quarterly Economic Survey (QES) findings. Recent Government reports find that the ‘new era of opportunity’ will cause a desperate need for a change in skills in order for the industry to thrive and compete.
