THE SIBFORDIAN 2018

Two decades of Rugby Sevens

2

018 saw Sibford celebrating the 20th Sibford School Rugby

Sevens Tournament.

Launched in 1999, the inaugural Sibford Sevens was a one-day event restricted to boys playing in the under 12s category and featured a total of 16 teams from neighbouring schools.

Fast forward 20 years and the Sibford Sevens is now spread over five days and features both boys’ and girls’ teams ranging from Under 12s through to Under 18s.

The 2018 event featured over 100 teams with all games being run with the support of Northampton Saints Community Coaching Team.

Details of the very first Sibford Sevens Tournament as reported in the 1998-99 school magazine:

The Sibford Under 12s Rugby Sevens This was the first tournament of its kind that the School had run. Sponsored by Hartwell Ford, 16 teams took part in an afternoon of fast and furious rugby. The teams came from schools around Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire with a wide range of abilities, but with some careful seeding all the teams played at least four good games. Sibford had an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team playing, both doing remarkably well, losing at the final stages of their respective tournaments. The overall champions were Josca’s Preparatory School from Abingdon. The Trophy, which had been specially made for the event by John Viggers [former Craft, Design, and Technology technician], was presented by Trevor Leota of Wasps and Western Samoa.
