In the early hours of 30 June, a group of 21 Year 12 and 13 students and four members of staff left Sibford for their World Challenge Expedition. On landing in Borneo the group split into to two teams and, while they broadly followed the same activities, they didn’t meet up again until it was time to catch the plane home. Victoria Macauley, Science Teacher and Head of Key Stage 3, organised the trip and accompanied Team 1. Student Sophie was a member of Team 2. Over the following pages both share their experiences


Students discover grit and determination in Borneo


I


t is difficult to explain the benefits of trips like this for our young people in a few words, writes Victoria Macauley.


It isn’t just about seeing the world and experiencing different cultures but more about the personal achievements and self-reflection that happen during the journey.


The Borneo expedition in the summer of 2018 was peppered with cheesy inspirational travel quotes that were emblazoned everywhere we went but it is true enough to say that ‘travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer’.


At the start of an expedition the overriding emotions among the students are that of excitement but also nerves. This is understandable of course – all of the challengers have signed up to to the adventure but they don’t really know what to expect. There is so much information for them to look at in the build-up but invariably some haven’t taken the time to fully prepare, with the feeling that it is ‘ages away’ and, in
