THE SIBFORDIAN 2018
Living Adventurously O
ver the course of the 2018 summer holidays we saw our
two former squash courts knocked through to create a space for a state of the art climbing wall (see page 13).
This project has been funded jointly by the PSFA (Parents, Staff and Friends Association of Sibford School) and the school.
At the time of writing, we have already trained 12 members of staff to teach others on the wall and we have seen daily visits to the wall by staff members who are training each other as they prepare to introduce climbing onto the curriculum and more widely within the community. Exciting times indeed!
At the head of the wall is our school logo, beneath which are two words: ‘Live Adventurously’. We do not have that many Quaker ‘sayings’ emblazoning the school (although I feel we should have more) but, as a starting point I cannot think of any words which are more fitting than these. They are taken directly from Advices & queries 27:
Live adventurously. When choices arise, do you take the way that
offers the fullest opportunity for the use of your gifts in the service of God and the community? Let your life speak.
On a climbing wall the words are synonymous with the sport. Climbing is, by nature, adventurous. More widely, these words chime with our desire to encourage our community to be bold and courageous, to take responsible risks and to challenge themselves.
There is also a direct link to the latter of our ‘3R’s’ – Relationships, Respect & Resilience. Resilience for us recognises that there will be occasions when times are hard and we will struggle. We will come across obstacles which challenge us and, sometimes, will stop us in our tracks. By living adventurously we would hope to encourage our community to ‘stick at it’ and ‘give it a go’, knowing that they may fail and make a mistake but equally knowing that they have tried their best and they have not given up. This approach encourages creativity, imagination and an entrepreneurial attitude to life.
As a school we put great store by the happiness of our pupils.
We also recognise that every member of our community will bring different qualities and talents (indeed ‘gifts’), as well as fears and weaknesses to the school. Coming from a starting point of ‘it’s OK to get it wrong’ and ‘live adventurously’ gives us a steer which helps to define us, to encourage problem-solving and to support the individual as well as the wider community. Our commitment to holistic and values driven education gives us a fabulous setting for living adventurously in all that we do.
Advices and queries 27 also gives us the joyous words of: ‘Let your life speak’. Beyond a firm belief that all members of our community have a voice and part to play in the direction and life of our school, these words speak volumes to us of the importance of using ones gifts to make a positive difference. Sibford School offers an approach to education which gives every opportunity for youngsters to excel – whatever their strengths and talents. In an ever changing world we are committed to educating the whole child so that they may truly live adventurously whilst letting their lives speak.
