THE SIBFORDIAN 2018

Alex created a Hall Shelf Unit for his A Level product design. He says: “I was inspired by a number of things. Firstly, the wonderful French design movement called ‘Art Nouveau’ and then seeing the ironwork used around the Paris metro which is very beautiful. I then became inspired by the trees around Sibford School and combined all three elements in my work.”

Arran produced a Child’s Hammock for his A Level design: “I quite like hammocks, although I have never had one, so I thought this was a great chance to make one,” he said. “I particularly wanted to make a hammock for children that was of a high quality as there doesn’t seem to be much in this area on the market.

“I did a bunch of research into how hammocks are made and the techniques used to make them and then flipped everything I knew about hammocks and went about designing a product that is unique.

“I used standard cutting and assembly parts to build the product. The hardest part was making sure the hammock fitted within the stand as well as cutting the curves to fit in the base.

“I am quite proud of how the end result turned out. In all honesty I wasn’t expecting the product to turn as well as it did and the response from teachers and students has been phenomenal.”
