THE SIBFORDIAN 2018 Harry’s horticultural haven

Harry Wragg took over as Sibford’s teacher of Horticulture in September 2017 ... stepping into the shoes of Angy Bovill who had been helping students discover their green fingers since 1984. He reports on his first 12 months in Sibford’s grounds and greenhouses.

017/18 has been a very busy year in the Horticulture department ... with Year 10 pupils, international students and lunch time club participants making a great impact.

Gardening club has been really successful and we’ve seen a rise in numbers, especially during the summer term. Pupils helped with sowing vegetable seeds, planting up hanging baskets and potting on tomatoes and chilli pepper seedlings.

The international group has been very efficient with planting out sweetcorn, summer squashes, runner beans and Dahlia tubers.

Year 10 pupils have completed a wide range of practical horticultural tasks during the course of the year and next year will be completing the City & Guilds Level 1 Diploma.

It was fantastic to be able to work alongside Hannah Copping’s Countryside Management students and support the Year 7s for the hedgerow planting ... it was a bitterly cold day, but we got the job done and are now seeing plenty of new growth.

Year 10 pupils also helped with Sibford School Open Day, giving guided tours of the department and helping with the plant sale. Money raised from the sale has been put towards the new climbing wall fund.
