A visitor’s guide to Oxford

ear 9 student Nou Nou


was so inspired by a visit to Oxford that she produced her own tourist information guide.


Nou Nou, whose home is in Shanghai City, joined Sibford in 2016. She has been learning English with the support of our ESOL department and has been so successful that in 2018/19 will start preparing for her GCSE exams and joining mainstream English lessons.

CHRIST CHURCH is a college of the University of Oxford in England. The college is associated with Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, which serves as the college chapel whose dean is ex officio the college head. It is the second wealthiest Oxford college.


HERTFORD BRIDGE, often called ‘the Bridge of Sighs’ is a skyway joining two parts of Hertford College over New College Lane in Oxford, England. It was designed by Sir Thomas Jackson and its distinctive design makes it a city landmark.


THE RADCLIFFE CAMERA is a building of Oxford University, England designed by James Gibbs in neo-classical style and built in 1737-49 to house the Radcliffe Science Library. It is sited to the south of the Old Bodleian, north of St Mary’s Church and between Brasenose College to the west and All Souls College to the east.


MAGDALEN COLLEGE stands next to the River Cherwell and has within its grounds a deer park. The large, square, Magdalen Tower is an Oxford landmark, and it is a tradition, dating to the days of Henry VII, that the college choir sings from the top of it at 6am on May morning.


THE BOAT RACE is an annual rowing race between the Oxford University Boat Club and the Cambridge University Boat Club, rowed between men’s open- weight eights on the River Thames in London, England. It is also known as the University Boat Race and the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race. The first race was in 1829 and the event has been held annually since 1856, except during the First and Second World Wars.
