THE SIBFORDIAN 2018
D
ragons of all shapes and sizes could be found in the Junior School during the first half of the Spring
term as pupils enjoyed their creative curriculum topic ‘Journey to the Orient’.
A vertical learning day ... where children worked in house groups rather than their normal classes ... saw a giant origami dragon created out of more than 300 paper triangles.
In the Library, children demonstrated how they were ‘flying high with reading’ by producing a
soaring dragon to
hang from the ceiling. In keeping with the literary theme, the dragon’s scales were made from paper plates, decorated to represent the titles of their favourite books. Other scales were made from the bookmarks used to
record home reading, and the tongue was made from certificates celebrating reading.
Year 6 pupils honed into their Chinese dragons in pottery. They
artistic side, creating mythical studied the art of Qi Baishi, then
had a go at painting in his style (which they did very successfully as
can be seen by the backdrop on this page). Pupils also made their own version of the Terracotta Army, although we called our statues ‘Terracotta Friends’.
Year 4 explored how light travels away from a light source until it meets an object when they created their own shadow
puppet theatres. Highlight of the topic was a visit from Chinese Dragon Dance
expert, Manisha Solanki. Manisha explained how Chinese people think of dragons as helpful, friendly creatures linked to good luck, long life and wisdom. She taught the children how to dance with the
dragon, parasols and fans. The day culminated with a performance to parents.
