Edgar Sewter Playschool and Out of School/Holiday Club
MAnY thanks to everyone who joined us in our expedition through the town for the halesworth carnival procession; children and parents transformed themselves into a lovely array of jungle animals to escort ethel the elephant. ethel was created and named during half term by the children who attended holiday club, she was made on a wire frame and plastered over. Technical expertise, thanks to Rob provided her with wheels to enable her to rumble through the jungle (Thoroughfare). The children from playschool painted her in beautiful colours and made her unique and much admired by adding the finishing touch with each of their handprints. ethel looked splendid! Many thanks to all who donated coins to our collection buckets, this will be used to provide new resources. We have held transition visits
into new nursery and reception classes and will miss the children we have had the pleasure to support during their time with us. We wish everyone a happy start to new classes and look forward to welcoming our new children and families as they begin their play and learning with us. As we finish the term we are
looking forward to our trip to the Playbarn and holding a Pirates
party. Playschool runs every day

CAFE POETS
On a lovely sunny evening we walked to the Fire Station when the crew showed the Brownies around the station and Fire engine. The highlight was when the girls were allowed to work the hoses and many of them were soaked to the skin. A good job it was warm as they were wringing the water out of their uniform! We recently went to Minsmere
with Rainbows, Brownies and Guides from all of the Division which included girls from Beccles, Bungay, earsham,

COnGRATULATIOnS to Year 10 student harvey Sayer who was awarded the Trevor Collyer Cup by Bungay Town Council at a ceremony in May. The cup is awarded annually to a young person who has given outstanding service or
commitment.
harvey has shown exceptional commitment and skill in sport. he has represented our school in a wide range of sports and has shown particular commitment in football. Out of school, he plays for Colchester United FC and the england U15 football team. he made his debut for england earlier this year in a match against Belgium. harvey’s skill, coupled with his positive attitude and determination makes him a very worthy recipient of the Trevor Collyer Cup. Twelve of our Year 9 students
had the great opportunity to take part in a 3 day archaeological dig in association with the University of Cambridge. They were contributing to real academic research for the Archaeology department’s investigation into what remnants lay beneath currently occupied rural settlements. Over two (mostly sunny!) days at designated sites in Blythburgh, teams of students plotted and dug out a test pit to specific requirements and conducted their own archaeological
investigation
using specialist techniques and equipment. notes and reports

were made at regular intervals, with any findings being bagged up and stored by the University. The final day was spent at the University of Cambridge, with the opportunity to share findings and participate in lectures at the campus. The students were given a guided tour of Downing College and the opportunity to ask questions about university life. The participants are all now in the process of finalising their individual written assignments, which will be marked by academics at the University. At the end of May, 80 Year
13 students and staff gathered at Rookery Park Golf Club to celebrate the end of the students’ Sixth Form education at Bungay high School. The students have been working hard in preparation for their examinations and the evening allowed them some time to enjoy relaxing with each other as well as celebrating. For some students who have been with each other since the Reception Class at Primary School, it was a sad farewell! Rookery Park provided the group with an excellent meal and the students enjoyed dancing until late in the evening. earlier in the evening, presentations were
made by the Sixth Form Team and Will Binder and eleanor Baker finished their tenure as head Boy and head Girl with farewell speeches. We wish all the students good luck for their exams and best wishes for their future education and careers. A team of Bungayhigh students
competed in the Panathlon north Suffolk Multisport Finals in Lowestoft. Over 60 young people took part in the close-run pan- disability event. Bungay high fought off tough competition, finishing in bronze position. Our students were superb in their behaviour and efforts throughout the whole competition. The team comprised of Andrew Flatt, Zach Thorndyke, Jenna hatcher, Polly Collyer, Dyllan Francis, elijah Chapman, Darcy White, James Thurston, Saffron nichols, Kelsie Dyer and Alex Sargeant. Student Zack Thorndyke, said, “What a nice accomplishment for the school, this is the most fun we have had in ages. It doesn’t matter that we didn’t win, it is the friendship and teamwork shown that counts.”

halesworth and Southwold. We were really blessed with the weather but unfortunately were attacked by myriads of little black pollen beetles all morning as we explored the woods and went pond dipping. They just loved the Brownies yellow tee shirts! Fortunately, as we made our way to the beach in the afternoon to do a scavenger hunt and beach sculptures the breeze held them off. The girls found some very interesting specimens in the pond and amid squeals of delight and fright they identified larvae and other wriggling creatures.

TWenTY poets found themselves translated to the upstairs room of The White Swan for a most enjoyable, if irregular evening. The centre- piece of the night’s offerings was a powerful, well-crafted version of england’s oldest poem, Beowulf declaimed to the original booming rhythm of a goatskin drum. The whole room was transfixed by the drama of it: the hero’s epic struggle with demons and dragons, his finding of the fabulous treasure, and his fire- burial by the sea. This is the poetry that would have shaken the rafters at the Mead hall of King Raedwald at Rendlesham. What a privilege it was to live it all again, after 1500 years of time and history. Other, quieter poems followed, no less fabulous in their way; tender lines about Springtime’s fine store of beauty here in our Suffolk lanes and gardens, verses and songs of love and love defeated, poems of humour and deep-rooted feeling, poems loaded with agonising empathy against the very thought of War. We celebrated the beauty of old age, the random fun of youthfullness, the turning earth and all its seasons. This was a unique meeting, and against our usual form, we have need to name names? To Sue Benbow who, at very short notice, negotiated our
temporary change of venue. To Steve, our host at the White Swan and his team, for their open-hearted welcome. To Sue Mobbs, who has gained a special award against more 3000 other contestents in the RSPB - Rialto Poetry Competition. Congratulations Sue. Your excellent and beautiful lines mean much to
us all. Cafe Poets plan to meet again at the Town Library halesworth on July 20th. Tickets at the door. If you have a poem to read mail Mike at mab2015@
icloud.com or telephone 01986 872981. Readings begin at 7pm. Listeners always welcome. no previous experience required.
